Abuja Bureau - As part of Nigeria’s Democracy Day commemorations, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a formal address to a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, marking 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Africa’s most populous nation.

The address was part of a wider programme of national reflection and political engagement, celebrating the country’s democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

President Tinubu, who stood before lawmakers from both the Senate and House of Representatives, touched on key governance themes and underscored the importance of preserving democratic institutions amidst economic and security challenges.

Later in the day, a Democracy Day lecture is scheduled, where key political stakeholders are expected to speak on Nigeria’s democratic progress and the critical issues still facing the nation—from electoral reforms to economic policy and national unity.

High-Profile Attendance

The joint session attracted a broad spectrum of Nigeria’s political leadership, past and present. Among those in attendance were:

  • Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State

  • Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State

  • Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN)

  • Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume

  • Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu

Prominent figures from previous administrations were also present, including:

  • Former Senate Presidents Bukola Saraki and Ken Nnamani

  • Former Governors Aminu Masari and Anyim Pius Anyim, who also served as SGF

  • The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, a key traditional ruler

The gathering, rich in symbolism and statesmanship, reflects both the milestones achieved and the hurdles Nigeria continues to face in consolidating its democracy.
